AMANI WOMEN SEWING CENTER, ABUTIA TETI
Amani Women Centre (AWC) is a Non-Governmental Organization based in the U.S.A. and founded by Doris Mukangu, originally from Kenya, East Africa.
The mission and vision of the organization is to economically empower women and young girls through a variety of programmes and life-skills training that leads to self-suffi ciency and improved well-being.
AWC initiative in Abutia Teti began in 2021 when the organization started exploring the possibility of a sewing program to help women and young girls in the Volta Region of Ghana.
The AWC Ghana team, headed by Reginald Mitchell-Erawoc the COO at AWC, through various inquiries and conversations with Togbegã Abutia Kodzo Gidi V, Chiefs and elders, Mama Dunenyo IV and the Assemblyman collaborated to identify and address the most prevalent issue facing young girls at that time – teenage pregnancy.
Today, under the leadership of Mama Dunenyo IV, and two wonderful teachers, the Abutia Teti program has over 30 girls and a waiting list of young girls eager and patiently waiting to join the program.
The goals of the Program are to enable these young women:
- To learn sewing and sew for themselves and for their families.
- Explore the opportunities of Employment in any area of the sewing industry.
- Start home business – sewing for the community and surrounding towns to earn income.
- Become part at AWC’s small-scale manufacturing business – making items for sale on the global marketplace and sewing various items through contracts for AWC clients.
- Establish an Advance contractual team (Mostly Alumnae) to earn income sewing for AWC’s social enterprise (Johari Africa).
- Train to become an assistant teacher and graduate as an instructor teaching at AWC.
